I remember the long road ahead. Miles it seemed as I peered out the window, trying to muster a smile, but could not. What is wrong with me I would ask myself over and over. I wiped a tear trying to steal itself down my cheek, hoping my husband would not see the state my heart was in.

Why was I feeling this way and how did I solve it?

I cannot forget that phone call. That face I saw on the phone. He did not see me but I saw him. Sleeping, but was it peacefully? I just wanted to be next to him, let him know I was there as he was preparing for his journey to a new destination where I would never see him this side of heaven again. But being several states away, how could I be there?

I felt so sick, sick to my stomach, mentally unfocused, the heat ever rising and then the chills in my body and eventually, the ever persistent aches and pains. How could I feel so bad on such a wonderful time of traveling, even though we were work camping, but still able to travel to the most amazing destinations we ever saw? And actually we just came back from visiting Glacier National Park!

Standing on a mountain peak, I looked around the desert landscape before me. I have seen it before, but today it was different. I murmured the words,

“I have changed.”

I noticed a smell. I have a nose that can smell very well, almost too well. My husband could not smell it. Then it seemingly disappeared, or I got used to the smell. It is like when there is a new smell in your home or that new car smell, and after a while you get acclimated to it, right?

I remember how excited I was to start fulltime rving. The joy and the eagerness to start was very much evident as we planned and plotted how we were going to fulltime rv, the places we would go, the adventures we would seek. Ah, yes, fulltime rving was the ticket for a dreamy retirement life, full of wonderful memories and much laughter. Weeeellllll…

I want to share useful advice that I wish someone shared with me before we started fulltime rving!

I love cheese. I simply adore the taste and feel of cheese. The ooey-gooey taste of cheese melting in my mouth, the joy it brings to my taste buds. One day I was eating a soft and cool to the touch type of cheese, kind of like a sandwich cheese. I was waiting for my buds to spring to life as I devoured the cheese, but something happened.

“We are losing power,” my husband said after a non-chalant drive as we headed out of town. Slowly and carefully, the semi was slowing down to a crawl, barely enough power to get us on a safe off ramp from the hustling and bustling freeway we were exiting from. Pulling over to the side, he put the brakes on, shut the beast off and stepped outside.

Fresh tears gently cascading down, my hair catching some of the tears, sticking to my face, like honey to a bee, I was curled up in a ball, in a fetal position. I wished I could snap my fingers and things would be better, different…
